This episode of the Freight Buyers’ Club, hosted by Mike King and created with the support of Dimerco Express Group, features a deep dive into the uncertain future of U.S. trade policies as we approach the upcoming U.S. election. With Democratic candidate Kamala Harris and Republican candidate Donald Trump presenting starkly different visions for trade, shippers, tech companies, and global supply chains are on high alert.

Political Perspectives on Trade

Kamala Harris has taken a cautious approach towards trade, signaling that she would maintain certain tariffs established during the Trump administration. This strategy includes a willingness to impose strategic tariffs aimed at supporting American workers. Stephen Olson, Visiting Fellow at the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies, points out that this could create stability amidst uncertainty, but it also hints at potential complexities in the trade environment.

On the flip side, Trump has pledged to implement far-reaching tariff hikes that may fundamentally reshape trade dynamics. Olson warns that this could lead to major disruptions in trade relationships and increase costs for both consumers and businesses. His warning resonates: “There’s a real danger that we could be heading for a spiraling trade war.

The Technology Sector at Risk

The conversation shifts to the consumer technology sector, where Ed Brzytwa, Vice President of International Trade at the Consumer Technology Association (CTA), outlines the potential repercussions of Trump’s proposed tariffs. Describing tariffs as regressive taxes, he emphasizes their significant impact on consumer purchasing power. According to a recent CTA study, these tariffs could reduce U.S. consumers’ purchasing ability for tech products by an alarming $90 billion.

Brzytwa highlights that if prices climb too high, consumers may no longer be able to afford products made domestically, negating any intended benefits of reshoring manufacturing. Furthermore, he shares that retaliatory measures from other countries would further complicate the competitive landscape for U.S. tech companies.

Preparing for Supply Chain Challenges

As the landscape becomes increasingly complex, Olson urges logistics and supply chain professionals to gear up for a challenging environment ahead. With many everyday products now containing dual-use technologies, increased trade barriers and regulations are expected.
