Dimerco
in Action

Complex logistics solution delivers helicopters safely from Italy to Indonesia

For a leading aerospace manufacturer, Dimerco managed the cost-effective shipment of 3 helicopters from Italy to Indonesia. Working with strategic partner Uniair Cargo, the team in Jakarta helped manage the end-to-end process that included customized protection and last-mile delivery from port to destination.

Our experienced helicopter logistics team carefully planned a safe, compliant route from the port to the final destination. Unloading required two cranes, two forklifts, and three special nine-meter dollies. In addition, we arranged with a certified lashing company to make two customized wing boxes to ensure secure carriage.

The project demonstrates the detailed planning, specialized equipment, cargo protection, and local expertise required for oversized cargo transportation. Dimerco regularly manages these types of complex moves for aerospace companies.

FAQs

What is aerospace logistics?

Aerospace logistics coordinates the transportation, warehousing, customs clearance, inventory, and delivery of aircraft parts, equipment, and other aerospace cargo. These services support manufacturing, distribution, maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) operations, spare parts, and time-critical Aircraft on Ground (AOG) requirements, often involving high-value, oversized, or sensitive components that require specialized handling.

What are the biggest logistics challenges in the aerospace industry?

Aerospace logistics challenges include moving high-value and oversized components safely, responding quickly to Aircraft on Ground (AOG) situations, positioning critical spare parts for maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) operations, navigating complex customs and trade requirements, and maintaining visibility over time-sensitive shipments. Logistics providers must also coordinate specialized handling while meeting strict quality, safety, and compliance requirements.

How does Dimerco support Aircraft on Ground (AOG) shipments?

Dimerco provides 24/7/365 support for AOG and other urgent aerospace shipments. Time-critical transportation options help move essential components quickly to reduce aircraft downtime and support demanding maintenance schedules.

How does Dimerco support aerospace maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) operations?

Dimerco supports MRO operations with time-critical transportation, spare parts logistics, warehousing, customs brokerage, and shipment visibility. Strategic inventory positioning can keep critical replacement parts closer to maintenance locations, while expedited transportation helps deliver urgently needed components when aircraft require repair.

How are oversized aircraft components transported safely?

Transporting oversized aircraft components can require detailed route planning, specialized equipment, blocking and bracing, customized cargo protection, permits, and coordinated first- and last-mile transportation. Depending on the shipment, cranes, forklifts, specialized trailers, and customized lashing or protective structures may also be required.

Why are spare parts logistics critical for aerospace maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) operations?

Aircraft maintenance depends on having the right replacement parts available when and where they’re needed. Effective spare parts logistics combines strategic inventory positioning, warehousing, and time-critical transportation to help MRO teams access critical components quickly, reduce maintenance delays, and minimize aircraft downtime.

How does Dimerco support aerospace logistics in Asia-Pac?

Dimerco combines an extensive Asia-Pac network with freight capacity, customs expertise, local market knowledge, warehousing, and international transportation. These capabilities help aerospace companies connect manufacturing and maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) operations across Asia with global markets.

What should aerospace companies look for in a logistics provider?

Look for an aerospace logistics provider with industry experience, ISO-certified operations, global transportation capabilities, customs expertise, 24/7 time-critical shipping options, specialized handling capabilities, and experience with oversized and sensitive aerospace cargo. The provider should also be able to support Aircraft on Ground (AOG) and maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) requirements and respond quickly when production, maintenance, or transportation plans change.

What special handling is required when shipping sensitive aircraft parts and equipment?

Sensitive aircraft parts and equipment may require customized packaging, blocking and bracing, lashing, shock or vibration protection, and careful loading and unloading to reduce the risk of damage in transit. Handling requirements depend on the component’s size, value, sensitivity, transportation mode, and route, making shipment-specific planning especially important.

How do aerospace logistics requirements differ across aircraft production, MRO, and AOG operations?

Aircraft production logistics focuses on keeping components and materials flowing reliably to manufacturing and assembly operations. Maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) logistics emphasizes inventory availability and timely distribution of replacement parts for scheduled and unscheduled maintenance. Aircraft on Ground (AOG) logistics is the most time-critical, requiring rapid transportation of essential parts to help return grounded aircraft to service. An effective aerospace logistics strategy must support all three requirements while maintaining appropriate handling, compliance, and shipment visibility.
